The air-to-air heat pump indoor unit is installed inside your home and delivers the heated or cooled air. Choosing the right unit depends on your needs and the type of system. Most homes use a split system, with an indoor and outdoor unit working together: the outdoor unit extracts heat from the air and transfers it inside, or reverses for cooling.

There are three main indoor unit types:

  • Wall-mounted units – Stylish models like Daikin Emura and Perfera, available in various sizes and colours.
  • Floor-standing units – Compact units that fit under windows or in rooms with limited height.
  • Concealed ceiling units – Hidden in ceilings or false walls for a discreet look.

Air-to-air heat pump indoor units (air conditioners) can be installed in three ways:

  • Wall-mounted units – Best placed above doors or centrally in a room. Avoid positioning above sofas, beds, or large wardrobes to ensure even airflow.
  • Floor-standing units – Typically installed under windows and away from furniture to allow air to circulate freely.
  • Concealed ceiling units – Hidden in false ceilings with only grilles visible. Keep vents clear of furniture and not directly above sofas or beds for optimal comfort.

An air-to-air heat pump (or air conditioner) typically has two parts: an indoor unit and an outdoor unit, commonly known as a split system. The outdoor unit, installed on an exterior wall, roof, or in a garden, houses the compressor, fan, heat exchanger, and controls. It compresses the refrigerant to transfer heat or cool air to the indoor unit.

For your heat pump to function as it should, it is essential that the system is installed correctly. Only an authorised technician should carry out the installation and in a suitable location. The surface must be firm enough to withstand the weight and vibrations of the unit and there must also be sufficient space for airflow and for connecting pipes and power cables. Any plants or shrubs that may be located near your heat pump should be at least a metre away and regularly pruned. The pump should also be installed in a place that’s easy to access for services and other general maintenance.

We often get asked why we can’t put the heat pump inside. Could they not be placed in the loft or conservatory? The answer to this is no. This is because, after a few hours, the heat pump will have extracted all of the warmth from the trapped air, effectively turning this space into a freezer. This is why air-to-air heat pumps need access to the free-flowing outside air.

It’s important to distinguish between cleaning and servicing an air-to-air heat pump. Cleaning can be done by the user, but servicing must be carried out by a qualified engineer.

  • Wipe air supply and return grilles/louvres with a damp cloth, keeping them unblocked.
  • Remove and clean filters by vacuuming or washing with lukewarm soapy water.
  • Gently hose and brush the outdoor unit, removing dirt, leaves, and cobwebs, take care not to damage the fins.
  • Use gloves, as coil fins are sharp.
  • Do not use gasoline, benzene, thinners, polishing compounds, or hot water above 40°C. Avoid scrubbing brushes and insecticides.
