The indoor unit of an air-to-air heat pump is fitted inside the property and distributes warm or cool air to maintain a comfortable indoor climate. It works with the outdoor unit as part of a split system, transferring heat indoors during winter and removing it during summer.

Indoor units are available in three main types. Wall-mounted models are the most popular for homes and come in various styles and finishes. Floor-standing units are ideal for rooms with limited wall height, fitting neatly beneath windows. Concealed ceiling units are hidden within suspended ceilings or false walls, providing discreet climate control without visible equipment.

There are three common placement options for an air-to-air heat pump indoor unit. A wall-mounted unit is typically installed high on a wall, ideally above a doorway or in a central position to allow even airflow. It should not be placed directly above beds, sofas or large furniture.

A floor-standing unit is best positioned beneath a window where airflow remains unobstructed, and nearby furniture should be kept clear to maintain good air circulation. A concealed ceiling unit is fitted within a suspended ceiling, leaving only discreet grilles visible. For optimal comfort, vents should not be blocked or located directly above seating or sleeping areas.

An air-to-air heat pump, often referred to as an air conditioner, usually consists of two components: an indoor and an outdoor unit, forming a split system.

The outdoor unit, installed on an exterior wall, roof or in a garden, houses the compressor, fan, circuit board and heat exchanger. It works by compressing the refrigerant to transfer heat to or from the indoor unit, providing heating or cooling to the room.

For optimal performance, an air-to-air heat pump must be installed correctly by a qualified technician. The unit should be placed on a stable surface with enough clearance for airflow, pipework and power connections. Any nearby plants or shrubs should be at least one metre away and regularly trimmed. The location should also allow easy access for servicing and maintenance.

Many ask if the heat pump can be installed indoors, such as in a loft or conservatory. This isn’t possible, as the system relies on fresh outside air, otherwise it would quickly remove all the warmth from a confined space, making it ineffective.

It’s important to distinguish between cleaning and professional servicing. While routine cleaning can be done by the user, servicing must always be carried out by a qualified engineer.

Follow your heat pump’s manual for cleaning instructions. Key steps include:

  • Wipe air supply and return grilles with a damp cloth, ensuring they are not blocked.
  • Remove and clean filters by vacuuming or washing with lukewarm soapy water.
  • Clean the outdoor unit gently, hosing away dirt and brushing off cobwebs, taking care not to damage the coil fins.
  • Wear protective gloves when handling sharp fins.

⚠️ Do not use gasoline, benzene, thinners, polishing agents, or water/air above 40°C, and avoid scrubbing brushes or insecticides.
